Sakura Festival 2009 a Big Success
The annual Sakura Festival was held at Uwajimaya Plaza on April 25, 2009.
The fun, family-oriented event was a great success thanks to the good weather and even better
entertainment and food. And of course, the superb staff at Uwajimaya.
The Sakura Kai and International School kids who sang were a big hit with the crowd, and the cute
Kohitsuji Yochien Japanese Preschool kids singing would have melted the hardest heart. These children’s
groups and their enthusiastic singing are always a highlight, and the festival would not be the same
without their genuine sense of fun.
Probably the biggest hit at the festival was Takohachi Taiko. This grass-roots taiko group was started by
group of Japanese and Americans who are passionate about traditional Japanese taiko. Bernie Capell, Event
Coordinator for Uwajimaya Beaverton Plaza echoed the crowd’s surprise and enthusiastic appreciation of the
new group, saying, “They sounded so good, I was s osurprised ho they have blossomed into a truly skilled
taiko group”. Everyone talent and energy, and by the upbeat, traditional music they played.
Planning has already started for next year’s festival, and Bernie Capell already has a lot of great new
ideas. One of these is to headline a couple of the entertainers. “We have a lot of talent in our community,
I’d like to see some of these groups get the credit they work hard for and deserve. “she said.
For anyone who would like to introduce their business, product or organization to the public these community
events at Uwajimaya Plaza are the best venue for this. They bring in large crowds of people who are interest
in their community and diverse cultures.
