Waves of Harmony is a global music initiative founded in 2020 that brings together master musicians from Japan and around the world to blend traditional instruments like shamisen with diverse global styles, reimagining centuries-old folk music for a modern, cross-cultural audience.
For this special Atlanta performance, Waves of Harmony presents a focused interpretation of its vision: an intimate, all-shamisen ensemble. Stripping away the broader instrumentation, this performance showcases the depth, versatility, and emotional range of the shamisen alone—offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience the instrument's full voice within the project's signature spirit of cultural connection.
This performance features Reigen Fujii, a legendary tsugaru-jamisen master from Tokyo Japan, who has earned the champion title at many shamisen tournaments, and is considered one of the highest level tsugaru-jamisen artists in Japan. Also performing are Yumi Torimaru, leader of Kotori Kai in Portland, Su Bunjamin, Founder of Shamisen Berlin, her husband Kyle Abbott and Edwin Itoh, both co-producers of Waves of Harmony, as well as local shamisen players Elton Hayashiuchi, Adrian Crovetto, and Truman Wilson. Please enjoy their performance of authentic tsugaru shamisen and modern fusion.
